16 Divine Virtues (Solah Shringar)














In Hindu Mythology,‘Solah Shringar’ means 16 Bridal Adornments  that encompasses sixteen steps that women follow for their beautification from head to toe at the time of wedding.

According to Hindu Mythology, the bride is equated with the divinity of Goddess Lakshmi, who is the goddess of prosperity, fertility and beauty in Hinduism.

The various 16 stages / steps of Solah Shringar are –
1.     Bindi - a big bindi between the eyebrows.
2.    Sindoor - Sindoor or vermillion is a red-colored powder that is applied on parting of the bride’s hair by the groom. It’s akin to the ring in Western countries.
3.    Maang Tikka - a hair accessory that adorns the forehead of the bride. 
4.    Anjana or Kajal - Eyes are accentuated with Kajal, which is applied on the edges of the eyelids.
5.    Nath or Nose Ornament - a nose ring in the left nostril, which is a symbol of marital life.
6.   Haar or Necklace - The Haar or the necklace is symbolic of prosperity.
7.    Karn Phool or Ear Ornaments or Earrings - It is worn complementing the haar or necklace.
8.    Mehendi - Mehendi or henna defines celebrations. It is applied on hand and feet in intricate designs.
9.   Choodiyan or Bangles - The bride puts on both gold and glass bangles, which signify the long life and prosperity of her groom.
10.  Baajuband or Armlet – It is worn by the bride on the upper part of the arm. 
11.    Aarsi & Haathphool - The bride wears on both her hands to adore the upper part of the hand. 
12.  Keshapasharachana or Hair Accessory - This stands for the hair adornment.
13.  Kamarband or Waist Accessory – It’s the waistband that enhances the graceful shape of a female silhouette.
14.  Payal & Bichuas – These are the anklets and toe rings.
15.  Itar or Scent - scent or perfume which lets out a fragrance around.
16.  The Bridal Dress or Shaadi ka Joda – The traditional bridal dress embellished to perfection.





Solah Shringar
These 16 stages of Solah Shringar would all prove to be in vain if we all (and not only the brides) do not possess the 16 divine virtues of God. These divine virtues are the sole property of the Almighty Authority which HE has showered upon us, only because we are HIS CHILDREN and we have all rights to inherit HIS property of OCEAN OF DIVINE VIRTUES.


The basic 16 divine virtues (Solah Shringar) through which the LORD is beautifying us and our lives are –
1.     Virtuous – a perfect blend of all virtues leading to divinity.
   2.   Idealism – to set very basic rules/principles and lead one’s life accordingly.
3.  Potentiality – to possess high calibre to innovate and contribute in developmental growth.
4.    Conscientiousness – to possess the sense of right and wrong and always deal in fairness.
5.  Redemption – to free humanity from sins and become the Redeemer.
6.  Truthfulness – to follow the path of truthfulness and restrict oneself from falsehood.
7.   Firm determination ­– to be firmly and self determined in one’s deeds.
8.  Good conduct  - to possess good character.
9.  Beneficence – to do charitable deeds for needy ones’ betterment / benefits.
10. Adeptness – to be skillful in life’s deeds.
11.  Blissful – to fill oneself and others with complete happiness.
12. Courageous – to possess courage to save oneself and others at times of need.
13. Anger free – to control one’s temper and develop patience with tolerance.
14. Brilliance – to keep shining throughout by one’s good actions and feelings.
15. Benevolence – to have feeling of goodness towards all- in thoughts, words & actions.
16. Graciousness – to follow a gracious living and set an example for others as well.

The basic 16 divine virtues / Solah Shringar (Adornments) can further be simplified so that we all human beings can easily imbibe them into our lives. Thus, making our lives gracious, virtuous leading to a path closer and closer to the Almighty Authority – The Lord.
